Bengaluru, Feb 8: Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Tanveer Sait has allayed fears about the measles-rubella vaccine project and affirmed it was safe for children.

The vaccination drive launched by the government has run into controversies with some experts raising objection to the specifications of the needles being used to administer the vaccine to children.

"I, too, heard the needle used for vaccination is thick. As education minister, I'm responsible for the drive taking place at schools. I'm answerable to parents. I've consulted doctors who said there is not much difference between the two needles (of 23 and 26 gauge). I have been assured it is safe," the minister said.

Principal Secretary (health) Shalini Rajneesh said 23-gauge needles with 120-mm length were being used for measles injections for the past 30 years and the same would be used for MR-VAC campaign too. "Private doctors are talking about 26-gauge needle. We have taken adequate measures to ensure safety of children and the nurses have been welltrained. The parents need not be worried," she said.

The Karnataka government plans to vaccinate 1.64 crore children aged between 9 months and 15 years in three weeks.

Experts said vaccination is the subcutaneous injection, and requires a thinner needle. Inter-muscular injection requires a thicker needle.

On Tuesday morning when the drive was launched, all the centres used 23-gauge needles with auto-disabled syringe to administer 0.5-ml vaccine. Only a few used 26-g aug e needles. At Bharat Sevadal School where education minister Tanveer Sait launched the drive, nurses were given 400 needles of 23-gauge and two 26-gauge needles.

At Ambika Primary School in Nandini Layout, a team of three nurses ad ministered 650 vaccines and all were through 23-gauge needles. The team vaccinated 600 children at Shiksha Nikethan School using 23-gauge needles.

Dr Yashoda Devi, an independent paediatrician, said the government had failed to do due diligence before embarking on the immunization drive."Specification of the needle is a minor issue. The basic question is: Why has the government imposed MR-VC vaccine when MMR vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella is already around?" she said.

Some private city schools are yet to take a call on allowing vaccination of their students and have decided to wait for parents' consent.

Mangaluru: Disgruntled BJP leader and former MLA K Raghupathi Bhat, who is contesting the legislative council election as an independent candidate from the South West Graduates constituency, said the BJP has adopted the “godfather culture” of the Congress.

Bhat told reporters here on Saturday, that he has not tried to appease any senior BJP leaders to get a party ticket to contest the MLC poll.

“I am contesting and seeking votes based on my achievements. My contesting may have a negative impact on the BJP. However, I want to go back to the BJP after winning this election,” Bhat said, and refused to answer the actual reason for the denial of a BJP ticket to him.

“I have no idea who played from behind that I was denied a ticket for the MLC poll.

Earlier, the BJP had a culture of selecting candidates for MLA and MLC polls by seeking the opinion of party workers at the booth level, followed by discussions at mandal and district levels.

Now the situation is such that even if one person’s name was sent from the state, the final list will be different. The godfather culture of the Congress has stretched into our party too. Only those who appease leaders get a ticket in the BJP. However, I have not appeased any leader. I believe in the support of party workers, and with this confidence I am contesting the election,” Bhat said.

To a query, Bhat said that he has not contacted by BJP leaders after deciding to contest the MLC poll.

“I have already requested all leaders that I should get the party’s Form B to contest the MLC poll from the South West Graduates constituency. I have told them that I am also contesting as an independent candidate on behalf of the BJP. The ultimate aim of my contesting the election is that senior leaders should know the injustice that honest party workers are facing in the BJP,” he said.

Mangaluru: Former MLC Ivan D’Souza on Monday led a delegation to the Passport Seva Kendra in Mangaluru, urging the authorities to provide basic facilities for applicants. D’Souza addressed the media, highlighting the lack of essential amenities at the Mangaluru PSK. “I have requested the authorities to provide basic facilities for people visiting the PSK.

There are no chairs for the convenience of people who arrive at the PSK. They are forced to sit or stand by the side of the road or on footpaths. Additionally, there is no parking facility, no washrooms, and water has not been provided for the public,” the Congress leader stated.

An average of 500 to 600 people from various parts of the state visit the PSK. They have to wait in the scorching heat of the sun, D’Souza mentioned, urging the govt to address these issues promptly. “Officials have agreed to find solutions to the problems faced by the people. Meanwhile, we have also demanded that the PSK be relocated to a more convenient space. We have suggested that the PSK could be moved to the old DC’s office, where there is sufficient space. If our demands are not met, we will hold a protest,” D’Souza explained.

Ashraf Kinara, vice-president of the Dakshina Kannada Waqf Advisory Committee, echoed the sentiment, stating that the authorities should either provide all basic facilities for passport applicants at the PSK or relocate the centre to a better location.
