Mangalore, Apr 1: Former President of India A P J Abdul Kalam encouraged student electorates to exercise their votes in the Lok Sabha Elections 2014 and participate in the largest elections to be held in the world with around 150 million first-time voters in the country.

The Missile Man of India ' interacted with students from various colleges across the region at an interactive programme organised by the Dakshina Kannada district administration as part of Systematic Voters ' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme at TMA Pai International Convention Hall in the city on Tuesday.

In his inspiring speech, he advocated students to vote for a person of integrity and free from corruption and elect a righteous candidate based on his performance and quality of governance. The most important quality you must see in a leader is that he/she should not be afraid of problems, he said, urging them to cast their votes as it was the most significant privilege and responsibility ' they had.

Speaking on creative performance and its dimensions, he taught students the mantra of knowledge, creativity, righteousness and courage. Learning gives rise to creativity, which in turn gives rise to thinking, which provides knowledge and makes you great. Where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in character, harmony in the home, order in the nation and peace in the world. If you elect a leader who has righteousness in his heart, there will be peace in the world and India needs such a leader,” he said.

He said that qualities such as having a great aim, acquiring knowledge continuously, hard work and perseverance would help them achieve things in life. “Education gives you wings to fly, and achievement comes from fire in your subconscious mind. Wings of fire along with great knowledge will make you fly,” he told the students, reciting lines from his famous poem I will fly '.

The former President also inspired the students to have courage to think differently, travel on unexplored paths and conquer the problems. Every citizen has the right to live with dignity. In a vibrant democracy, an empowered citizen is one who knows his rights and defends them with courage, he said.

As part of the SVEEP programme, an audio CD containing election songs in various languages was unveiled by Mr Kalam.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
