Belthangady, Jan 6: To facilitate smoother movement of vehicular traffic in the narrow Charmadi Ghat after the Shiradi Ghat was closed to vehicles for road repairs, emergency widening works began on the alternate route on Sunday.

On Sunday, senior officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) visited Charmadi, conducted a study and immediately began emergency widening works along the stretch.
The gaps along the sides of the road were filled with mud to widen the stretch in order to facilitate smoother vehicle movement on both lanes. On Monday, JCB machines were brought and portions of the stretch that were difficult for two vehicles to pass were widened.
Heavy vehicles are not being allowed on Charmadi stretch. Heavy vehicles coming from Madikeri-Puttur route and plying towards Chikmagalur via Dharmasthala and Ujire are prevented from plying further towards Charmadi.
These vehicles are directed towards the Kudremukh route via Guruvanyankere and Bajagoli in order to reach Mudigere in Chikmagalur. Heavy vehicles from Mangaluru are also directed to ply in this route.
