Engineering student kills self after lover ditches him and plots his murder

Karwar, Feb 19: A student of an engineering college in Karwar has allegedly committed suicide at a lodge in Bengaluru’s Majestic area has his girlfriend ditched him and allegedly threatened to kill him.

The deceased is Sunil J S, 20, a native of Holenarasipura, Hassan district, was a third-year student at the Government Engineering College, Karwar.

Sunil went to Bengaluru on February 13 after lying to his family that he was going to Karwar. He ganged himself with a bedsheet tied to the ceiling fan of a room at Shree Lodge, police said.

The next morning, the hotel staff noticed that the door of his room was bolted from inside and that he was not responding to knocks or phone calls.

They called up his relative, whose number was given during the check-in, and explained the matter to him.

Harish along with Sunil’s brother Anil J S rushed to Bengaluru. The hotel staff and the police later broke open the door only to find Sunil hanging.

According to police, Sunil fell in love with his classmate Arpitha while studying at the Taralabalu Jagadguru PU College. They were in a relationship for two years until Sunil moved to Karwar. Arpitha joined a college in her hometown, Arsikere.

Sunil had come home recently for a 15-day vacation. He learnt Arpitha had become close to her classmate Bharath H S, a resident of Bengaluru. Sunil was dejected and left for Bengaluru.

Police found a suicide letter on a table in the hotel room. It read: “Arpitha is my lover and since Bharath H S has threatened me over my life, I am taking the extreme step. I was in love with Arpitha for the past two years. Now she doesn’t want me and is in love with Bharath. They both had even threatened me that they will offer supari and eliminate me, and Bharath along with his associates had earlier assaulted me. Both of them need to be punished.”

Police believe Arpitha and Bharath had been conspiring to eliminate Sunil. Based on the death note, Anil filed a complaint with the Upparpet police who have booked both Arpitha and Bharath for abetment to suicide. No arrests have been made.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
