Ensure drugs for mentally ill are in stock, says Khader

Bangalore, Oct 10: Minister for Health and Family Welfare U?T?Khader said on Thursday that strict action will be taken against authorities and medical superintendents of government hospitals if essential drugs necessary to treat mentally ill patients are out of stock at any time in the year.

Speaking at an event organised by the department of health and family welfare on the occasion of World Mental Health Day in the, Khader said that a conducive atmosphere has to be created to assure the mentally ill that they can be treated. Besides, he said, to ensure suicide rates fall, a Centre for Suicide Prevention and De-addiction Centre would be set up.

Launching the Manasadhara Haagu Manochyaitanya Yojane scheme, Khader said, œTuesdays have been marked as that day of the week when special attention has to be given to psychiatric patients. In most government hospitals, there are no psychiatrists. To address this issue, specialists from medical college hospitals across the State have been ordered to render services on Tuesdays. We will also seek support from private medical colleges for the same. 

Chief minister Siddaramaiah who spoke after launching the website www.ksmha.com, the official site of the Karnataka State Mental Health Authority, said that the State would extent support to provide free treatment, medications, skill development and rehabilitation.

œWe are contemplating on providing free treatment for mentally challenged patients at all government and Taluk Hospitals,  he added. He said that the process to set up a Centre for Autism at Srirampuram had begun and that it would soon be completed. The government has also contemplated on having a two-day stress management programme for all the MLAs said Siddaramaiah.

The theme chosen by the World Federation for Mental Health for World Mental Health Day 2014 is'Living with Schizophrenia.'Director of Karnataka State Mental Health taskforce Dr Ashok Pai said that it was essential to build a support system to incorporate the schizophrenics into the main stream.

Patients kept waiting

It was ironic that patients for whom the day was dedicated, were made to wait. Chief minister Siddaramaiah, who was scheduled to reach the venue to inaugurate the event at Vidhana Soudha, reached one hour late.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Melkar (Bantwal): The 9th Annual Day celebration of SMR Public School, titled “EXCELLENTIA”, was held on December 15 with great enthusiasm and dignity, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey towards academic excellence and holistic development.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. U. T. Iftikar Ali. The chief guests were Dr. Akhtar Hussain, Mr. P. Moosabba Beary, Mr. Zakaria Jokattre, and Dr. T. M. Abdul Rahuf—whose inspiring addresses motivated the students and appreciated the school’s contributions to education.

The Annual Report was presented by the Headmistress, Ms. Fathimathul Zaheera, highlighting the school’s achievements and progress during the academic year. The Presidential Address was delivered by the Chairman of SMR Public School, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasised the vital role of education in shaping students’ futures and stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and consistent effort in achieving 100 per cent academic results.

Secretary of SMR Public School, Mr. Rifath Ahmed, and PTA President, Mr. Sandeep Kumar, were also present on the occasion.
