Errant conductor assaults student; Friends stage protest demanding action

Mangaluru, Mar 10: A group of students from city based Rosario College staged a demonstration in front of Mangaluru North Police Station on Tuesday demanding the arrest of a government bus conductor, who allegedly assaulted one of the students.

The protest comes after Abdul Samad, a B.Com. student hailing from Uppinangady, was assaulted by the conductor of a KSRTC bus which plies between Uppinangady and State Bank bus terminus.

The assailant conductor has been identified as Murugesh from Bagalkot district.

It is learnt that the conductor assaulted the passenger Samad when the latter took him to task for not caring the two female passengers who were about to board the bus. Sources said that the conductor give signal to the driver to move even before girls could enter the bus.

Samad lodged a complaint with Mangaluru North Police Station. When Mr Samad’s friends came to know about this incident, they left the college immediately and staged a protest in front of the station to exert pressure on the police to nab the conductor.

The police managed to disperse the crowd and promised to take action against the accused.

Samad was admitted to a hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, accused Murugesh also alleged that a few students attacked him and got himself admitted to Wenlock Hospital in the city. Police are investigating the matter.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
