Mangaluru, Feb 7: For the sole reason of justifying the ban on VHP leader Praveen Togadia in Bengaluru, the state government has also cancelled permission to AIMIM leader and MP Asaduddin Owaisi to hold a public function, said opposition leader in State Legislative Council K S Eshwarappa.
Addressing a press conference at BJP headquarters here on Saturday, he alleged that the state government was trying to curb the freedom of speech by banning Praveen Togadia from entering Bengaluru.
Following in the footsteps of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the state government is trying to curtail the freedom of speech of Praveen Togadia. By resorting to this, the state government might meet with the same fate as that of Congress government at the Centre after Indira Gandhi had curbed the freedom of speech during Emergency, he said.
He said that he respected the high court’s decision to uphold the ban on Togadia. However, Togadia has not been convicted in any case booked against him. The government is trying to curb his freedom of speech and expression, he said, advising chief minister Siddaramaiah to reconsider the decision on ban on the Hindu leader.
Criticising home minister K J George, Mr Eshwarappa said that the home minister had failed in controlling the communal clashes that broke out in parts of the state, proving that the state government was incapable of protecting the people.
Corruption allegation
He also criticised the state government for bowing to lobbying in the allotment of iron ore blocks to seven companies without the auctioning process. This is due to the lobbying by a few companies and has resulted in loss of thousands of crores, he alleged.
He added that the present state government supported corruption and the CM’s statements of providing a corruption-free government were false.
