Mangaluru, Jun 28: In the wake of collapse of a prominent bridge across River Phalguni at Moolara Patna, a team of experts from the Public Works Department (PWD) examined another old bridge across the same river at Gurupura on the outskirts of the city and declared it safe.
The team comprising of senior officials from the National Highway Division of PWD and civil engineers examined the bridge on the Mangaluru-Moodbidri National Highway for over three hours yesterday morning. The team suggested some precautionary measures, official sources said.
The team was sent by PWD Secretary Krishna Reddy following the bridge collapse of Moolara Patna bridge on Monday. Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S had sought inspection of the bridge in Gurupura.
The team started inspection at 6 a.m. The team made use of the specially designed bridge inspection vehicle that helps experts in examining the bottom of the bridge. The team bore a hole and took core sample of the road on the bridge.
An engineer from PWD said the team members found the bridge to be in good condition and fit for traffic movement. “They have suggested some precautionary measures. We will take it up works once the team submits the report,” he said.
The police diverted traffic on the Vamanjoor-Pachchanady-Bondel-Kavoor-Bajpe-Kaibamba route. Vehicle movement was restored around 10 a.m.
