In early March a provisional measure allowed these establishments to stay open till 1 am. However the order lapsed earlier this month. Although the government had plans to extend the provision, no formal orders were received by the food and liquor serving establishments, forcing them to shut shop by 11 pm this weekend.

A notification from the office of the excise commissioner released on 11th June stated: "The excise commissioner hereby partially modifies the hours of business on two days i.e., restricted to Fridays and Saturdays, in respect of the following licences in the limits of the Bangalore City police commissionerate up to June 30, 2015."

The licensees include clubs, star hotels, hotels and boarding houses and bars. They have been permitted to extend business upto 1am on two weekend days.

This notification was not received by all establishments on hand, however information is being spread to all of them said Ashish Kothare, president, Bars and Restaurants Association, "I have managed to get a copy of the order and we are circulating it," he added.

Regarding the impact of said extension to business profits, he opined that it is too early to say anything definitively and the repercussions would have to be judged in the long run. "But we are happy about the extension because it is important for the image of the city," he said.
