Facebook' friend held for raping PUC student in first meet

Udupi, Nov 17: In yet another sexual assault case on a minor girl, a youth was arrested by the police on charges of raping a minor girl in Udupi taluk.

The police have arrested car driver Harish, resident of Kurkalu village in Udupi taluk, in connection with the case.

The incident of rape has come to light three days after it took place. According to the complaint lodged at the police station, the sexual assault took place in Hariyadka police station limits in Udupi on November 13.

The minor girl is a student of a private PU college in Udupi. It is learnt that the culprit Harish had befriended the girl through the social networking site Facebook' and grew closer to her through chatting online. He had sent her a message asking her to come to Karkala to meet him in person.

On Thursday, the girl boarded a bus to Karkala, while Harish also boarded the same bus unknowing to the girl. On the way, he messaged the girl to alight at Hariyadka and got off the bus himself.

Meeting the girl in Hariyadka, Harish took her to a forest nearby, while few locals followed the couple unknowing to either of them. The group of locals then caught the two after a while, and handed the accused to Hariyadka police station.

During interrogation, it is said that Harish confessed to having committed such offences in the past with other minor girls.

Since the girl is a minor, the police have registered a rape case on the accused, who was remanded to judicial custody for 15 days. The girl was subjected to a medical examination.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey.
