Mangalore, Jul 15: It is alarming that the state government had made plans to implement the controversial Yettinahole project when the district of Dakshina Kannada itself is facing acute water shortage in summer months, voiced out farmer representatives from the district.
Presenting their demands at a meeting with the district authorities convened at the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Tuesday, farmer leader Ravikiran Punacha objected that the state government had given the green signal to the disastrous Yettinahole project instead of taking steps to implement a permanent project to provide water for drinking and agricultural needs in the district.
It is being said that the government has set aside a sum of Rs 11,000 crores for the implementation of the Yettinahole project which is touted to be in use for merely three months in a year. In case, the project is unsuccessful, such a huge amount of money will go down the drain, he pointed out.
He warned the district administration and the government of intense resistance from the farming community if their demand of a permanent solution for water shortage woes was not addressed.
To this, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim replied that he would raise this issue at the state developmental project meeting.
Bringing stability in areca prices and other problems of arecanut growers dominated most of the meeting. The farmers also demanded electricity supply for agricultural purposes, especially in rural areas of the district.
