Sullia, Oct 17: Fearful of being duped in guise of attractive gift schemes, consumers on Wednesday robbed an electronics and home appliances store in Sullia and took several appliances along with them.
Around 4,000 consumers had joined the scheme started by Shree Thathwamasi Enterprises in Sullia town, but only a few won and received prizes while the rest did not receive anything.
When the disappointed consumers tried to contact the owner of the store, he was unable. This gave fuel to rumours which in turn led to frustration. Angered at their alleged fraud, the consumers barged into the store and took home whatever appliances they could get hold of.
Following the break-in, throngs of people gathered in front of the store located near Vivekananda circle in Ganghinagar, while the police also stood on guard.
Over 50 establishments in the name of charitable trusts have introduced benefit schemes in Sullia town, and the citizens had complained to the deputy commissioner over a year ago to control them. Although the deputy commissioner had directed the police department to take action on establishments conning innocent people and made permission mandatory for new schemes, the locals allege that more benefit schemes continued to blossom in the taluk.
