Mangaluru, May 13: Francis John Musembi, a 58 years old man from Kenya was given a fresh lease of life after undergoing a successful kidney transplant at Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute, Mangaluru.

A team of doctors led by Dr Pradeep K.J., Consultant Nephrologist and Dr. Abhijith Shetty, Consultant Urologist of Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute, Mangalore performed the transplant. This adds another milestone and achievement in the field of Medical Tourism. A lot of patients are coming to Mangalore from across the world for treatment but this is a first successful kidney transplant done for an international patient in Mangaluru and Udupi districts. Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute Limited is proud to have played a pioneering role in creating this legacy in healthcare.

Mr. Francis had been suffering from chronic kidney failure for the past many years and undergoing hemodialysis twice a week in Kenya. He had to travel 70 kms twice a week for dialysis. Dialysis is quite painful and expensive treatment in Kenya. He is married with 5 children and works as an agricultural scientist in Kenya. One out of his 7 brothers, Mr. Patrick seeing his plight willingly agreed to donate him his Kidney. They contacted many local hospitals but the cost of transplant was very high and facilities were not on par.

Indiana Hospital has tie up with Kenyan government to treat such patients in our hospital and hence he was referred to Indiana Hospital. Our hospital’s Medical Tourism department & Transplant committee worked hand in hand to obtain all the state and embassy approvals at the earliest. Mr. Francis underwent a successful transplant on March 28th 2019. He is now healthy and free of dialysis.

“Organ donation is a gift any one can give, it has no cost and it is very powerful.  With this first successful transplant we want to create awareness among people regarding organ transplant. You don’t have to be a doctor to save lives; you too can save a life by donating your organs.  Keep an open mind, pledge your organs - your organs need not die with you, they can live by giving a new life to others who need them,” said Dr Yusuf Kumble, Managing Director, Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute limited.
