Five people arrested for assault on new year eve in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jan 16: The city police have arrested five men including two rowdy sheeters for assaulting a bike rider, his brother and a woman after their bike brushed with one of the gang member's leg on the New Year's night.

The incident happened in Mottappanapalaya in Indiranagar 6th stage. The assault was captured on two CCTV cameras where a gang of at least 12 drunk men was seen dancing on the road, partying and obstructing traffic.

They were greeting road uses on the pretext of new year when the bike approached brushing one of the men. The gang then assaulted the bike rider and in the meele the three including the woman fell down, said the police.

The gang members then rained blows on the rider one after the other even when the trio were trying to escape from the gang members. However, the victims who are said to be from Darjeeling did not lodge a police complaint.

The footage of the assault went viral after a few television news channels picked it up and telecase on Tuesday prompting the Indiranagar police to take up a suo-motu case.

The police then swung into action and picked up five men including the two rowdy elements for questioning. The suspects are Lokesh and Ambarish, residents of Indiranagar. Three others are yet to be identified.

The police are also on the lookout for others who were involved in the assault.

One of the rowdies Ambarish was spotted in a photograph with Shanthinagar MLA N A Harris.

"It was a case of road rage. The incident happened on the New Year's night. Since we have the footage, we have taken up a suo-motu case and have arrested five persons," said Additional Commissioner of Police (East) Seemanth Kumar Singh.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
