Followers of Moily and Muniyappa vie with each other for Cong MLC ticket

Bengaluru, Dec 8: The selection of a candidate for the Kolar local body constituency in the upcoming elections to Legislative Council has become a tough task for the State Congress.

MuniyappaMoili

Two former Union ministers, Veerappa Moily and K H Muniyappa, are vying with each other for a ticket for their followers. While Moily wants Anil Kumar as the candidate, Muniyappa is batting for his follower N Ramesh. Though Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC chief G Parameshwara held a meeting on Monday, they could not finalise the candidate.

The KPCC chief has convened a meeting of the elected representatives of the party from the two districts on Tuesday at the KPCC main office to elicit their opinion.

The party is already facing rebellion from those who were denied tickets in Dakshina Kannada, Mandya and Bengaluru Urban districts. Party leader from Mandya A S Ravindra Srikantaiah has written to Parameshwara questioning the rationale behind fielding Shivarame Gowda from the Mandya seat. Gowda had joined the BJP in 2008 and later returned to the Congress.

He had openly stated that he was responsible for the defeat of party candidate Ramya in the 2014 parliamentary polls, he added in the letter.

JD(S) candidates The JD(S) finalised three more candidates on Monday. It has decided to give tickets to one former MLA and two first- time contestants.

Former legislator Mallikarjun Akki will be contesting from Hubballi-Dharwad, while businessmen-cum- politicians from Bengaluru, H P Subba Reddy and A V Vinod Kumar, have been given tickets to contest from Bidar and Kodagu, respectively.

The party had earlier given the ticket to Bengaluru-based businessman Naresh Kumar to contest from Kodagu. However, owing to his daughter’s sudden illness, Kumar has backed out from the race, paving the way for his relative Vinod Kumar.

In another development, JD(S) State president H D Kumaraswamy urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure that no nominated member of the government to the town municipal councils, be allowed to vote during the MLC elections from the local authority constituencies on December 27.

Kumaraswamy has said only members from the urban local bodies, zilla, taluk, gram panchayats – democratically elected by the people – can alone vote in these elections.

Other than these members, nominated members cannot participate in the process of voting as specified under Article 243-R of the Constitution.

About five members are nominated by the government to every town municipal council, city municipal council and municipal corporation, with the number of TMCs varying from every other constituency. This would materially affect the result of the elections, he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
