Mangaluru, Aug 6: A youth was hospitalized with leg injuries after the Karnataka Forest Department officials opened fire at a vehicle transporting cattle to Kerala near Koornadka in Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada district yesterday.
The officials seized a vehicle and rescued four head of cattle. However, the three people on board the vehicle managed to flee.
Sources said that Nishant, who was driving the pick-up van, suffered a pellet wound on his left leg when the officials opened fire.
The Karnataka Forest Department has denied shooting at the people and claimed that the shots were fired in the air as a warning since the driver refused to stop the vehicle for a routine check.
However, Kerala police confirmed that Nishant suffered injuries when Forest officials opened fire. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kasaragod district.
K V Aneesh and P M Haneefa, who were with Nishant in the pick-up vehicle, have reportedly told the Kerala police that they were intercepted by Karnataka Forest officials at Alappy village while they were travelling on the Panathur-Sullia Road around 3.30 am.
