According to sources within the party, no fewer than four strong aspirants are vying for the BJP ticket in this prestigious constituency which includes parts of a coastal district and a malnad district of Karnataka.

After former chief minister D V Sadanada Gowda, who had earlier represented Udupi-Chikmagalur, hesitated to fight from the same constituency, BJP had reportedly decided to field former power minister Shobha Karandlaje.

However, Chikmagalur MLA CT Ravi, who is also an aspirant of MP ticket, has expressed his strong opposition to “outsider” Shobha 's candidature. Meanwhile, names of columnist Pratap Simha and Udupi Yuva Morcha president Vilas Nayak also doing the rounds.

The uncertainty in BJP has benefitted Congress party, which has almost finalized sitting MP K Jayaprakash Hegde 's name.

Udupi BJP President Uday Kumar Shetty also has admitted that the delay in finalizing the candidate has cost the party as far as campaign is concerned.
