Mangaluru, Sep 17: Karnataka government is now distributing LPG connection free to BPL families in urban areas too under few schemes, said U T Khader, Minister for food, civil supplies and consumer affairs.

Speaking to media persons here, he said that LPG connections can be provided to all BPL families through Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)
Initially, the central government has been planning to extend the scheme to 15 districts of the state. Later, based on state's request, it was decided to extend the scheme to all the districts in the state.
Mr Khader said he will soon meet Union minister of state (independent charge) for petroleum & natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan for the implementation of PMUY for LPG connection scheme in the state.
He said the central government has decided to implement the PMUY scheme in Karnataka based on the 2011 census.
As per the 2011 census, 23-26 lakh BPL families in the state are eligible to get free LPG connection under the scheme. However, the state has more families that are eligible to get LPG connection under the scheme, Khader said and added that he will request the Union minister to increase the number of beneficiaries.
Depriving a section from the purview of scheme will lead to a social imbalance, he noted.
