Mangaluru, Feb 17: A project will be shortly implemented to provide free housing sites through Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to those 15 police officers in Dakshina Kannada who had been part of the operation which led to the killing of notorious dacoit and Sandalwood smuggler Veerappan.

1.5 acre land: Out of the total 1.5 acre plot of land allotted by MUDA at Shaktinagar Padua in Mangaluru taluk, about 1.10 acre plot is being readied as housing sites. A total of 18 housing sites will be prepared, out of which 15 sites will be given to the selected police officers, while the remaining three will be auctioned and sold to prospective buyers.
In the 1.10 acre plot of land, a park will be prepared in 15 cents while other public facilities will be provided in another 10 cents of land.
MUDA has envisioned full-fledged development of the allotted land and will provide various facilities for the owners of the housing sites such as proper roads, drinking water facility and drainage system for the sites.
The state government had announced free housing sites for police officers who took part in the Veerappan operation in 2005. The government had notified the provision of free housing sites in various districts in the state through the urban development authorities. As per the notification, 15 police officers were selected in this regard in Dakshina Kannada district.
Mangaluru City South MLA J R Lobo said that the project to provide free housing sites to police officers part of the Veerappan operation had not been implemented since several years. Now, the state government has given priority to the swift implementation of the project and the sites will be handed over soon to the beneficiaries, he said.
