Udupi, Sept 9: The Forensic Science Laboratory’s (FSL) report on the death of Lakshmivara Tirtha Swami of Shiroor Mutt has forced the Udupi district police to close the case.
The 55-year-old seer died at the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal on July 19. A controversy broke out after a press statement by the Kasturba Hospital said that there was “suspicion of poisoning” and the toxicological samples had been sent for testing. His kin and followers had suspected that he was murdered. However, the FSL report, which was received by the police around one-and-a-half months later, had stated that there were no traces of poison or heavy metals in the Shiroor seer’s body.
Laxman B Nimbargi, Superintendent of Police of Udupi, confirmed that case was closed after going through the FSL report and the case file was handed over to the Assistant Commissioner of Kundapur Sub-division for further action.
The report was sent to the Kasturba Hospital for its final opinion on the cause of the seer’s death. Mr Nimbargi said that as per the final opinion, the seer died owing to oesophageal ruptures and chronic liver cirrhosis. “Since the death was considered natural one, we had to close the case,” he said.
