Mangaluru, Jan 24: In search of a hidden treasure, a gang of miscreants barged into a house, tied up family members and dug up the premises at Sarapady under Vittal police station limits in Bantwal taluk on Tuesday.
However, after two hour long effort, the gag members returned empty-handed. According to police, a group of nine people arrived in two cars at the house of Vighnaraj Bhat around 2am and asked Bhat to show the 'nidhi' that was hidden in their compound.
To the question, Vighnaraj and his nephew who was at home at that time replied there is no such treasure in their house and asked them to leave. Suddenly, the miscreants, who had covered their faces with masks, tied both of them with ropes and dumped them in a corner.
After that, the gang started digging the ground in the compound. They dug up the ground for two hours till 4am and left the premises after realising there was no treasure.
Police added that there was a rumour in the village for the past 40 years that Vighnaraj's father Ganapathy had found a treasure in his house but left unattended as per the suggestion of an astrologer who reportedly told him that it would bring back luck to his family if he touches the 'nidhi'. Since then, the villagers believe that the house has a hidden treasure.
When police asked whether there were any similarities between the dacoity that took place at Ivarnadu under Bellare police station limits in Sullia taluk on Monday where an arecanut merchant was robbed at gun point.
