Gas tanker explosion: two more die in hospital, toll rises to 10

Udupi, Sep 7: Two more persons, including a five-year-old girl, receiving treatment for severe burns that they suffered after an LPG tanker exploded at Bargi village near Kumta in Uttara Kannada district on September 1, died at the Kasturba Hospital here on Sunday.

With this, the toll in the accident reached 10. The names of the those — a girl and a woman — who passed away on Sunday were given as Navya Harikantra (5) and Nirmala (24). While Nirmala breathed her last at 3 a.m., Navya passed away at 6 a.m.

Navya’s mother, Shakila Harikantra (32), who was also injured in the explosion, died at the hospital here on September 3. Navya’s grandmother Prema Ganapati Harikantra (50) and her (Navya’s) brother Niranjan Harikantra (3), who were also injured in the explosion, passed away here on September 5.

With Navya’s death, four members of one family involved in the accident have died. According to sources, of the four injured patients getting treatment in the hospital, one is in a critical condition, while the others are stable.

Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
