Gold worth Rs 15.78 lakh seized at Mangalore international airport

Mangalore, Mar 21: The officers of Customs at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) have busted another modus operandi and detected concealment of gold in the baggage's of the two passenger coming from Dubai on Friday.

The seizure was worth Rs 15.78 lakh.

The officials seized gold weighing 529.640 grams in two separate cases totally valued at Rs.15.78 lakh. In the first case, the officers seized gold pieces, totally weighing 298.450 grams and valued at Rs.8.89 lakh concealed in chocolates in a carton box from the possession of a passenger identified Davood Abdulkader Ibrahim, a resident of Paravanadukkam Post, Kasaragod.

The passenger had arrived at Mangalore International Airport at 4.45 am by Jet Airways fight 9W531 from Dubai on Friday.

In the second case, the officers seized gold strips weighing 231.190 grams valued at Rs.6.88 lakh concealed in two photo frames and three eyeliner bottles kept in a carton box.

The accused in this case was Abdur Rahman Kunnil Abdul Khader, a resident of Thalangara, Kasaragod.

He had arrived at Mangalore International Airport by the same flight as the first passenger.

In both the cases the smugglers resorted to unique methods of concealing the goods by fabricating/moulding the gold in various shapes and concealing the same in their baggages.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
