Mangaluru, Nov 19: The officers of Customs at Mangaluru International Airport have busted another modus operandi of gold smuggling and seized gold weighing 1816.550 grams totally, in two separate cases worth nearly Rs 50 lakh.
In the first case, the officers seized gold in the form of seven numbers of Ten Tola Gold Bars, totally weighing 816.550 grams and valued at Rs 22 lakh concealed in innerwear from the possession of a female passenger.
The accused has been identified as Khairun Gulam Mahamad Shekh, aged about 48 years, wife of Ali Mohammed, residing at AT Sutrapada, Junagadh. She arrived at the Airport on Wednesday at about 7: 45 a.m. by Air India Express flight No.IX814 from Dubai.
In a similar modus operandi on the same day, the officers seized gold in the form of a one kilo gold bar, weighing 1000.000 grams and valued at Rs 27 lakh concealed in innerwear from the possession of another female passenger.
The accused is Mariyomma Ottapokkil, aged about 48 years, from Kozhikode, Kerala. She arrived at the Airport on Wednesday at about 8: 45 a.m. by Jet Airways flight No.9W531 from Dubai.
Both the female air passengers were later arrested and produced before the Judicial Magistrate. Further investigation in both the cases is under progress, stated a released issued by Krishna Kumar Prasad, Deputy Commissioner of Customs (Airport), Mangaluru.
