Kasaragod, Feb 20: Governor P Sathasivam has asked the state government of Kerala to submit an “urgent report” on the current status of the police investigation into the murder of two Youth Congress workers at Periya in Kasaragod on Sunday.

A Raj Bhavan communiqué said that Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala had met Mr. Sathasivam and briefed him on the issue.

Mr. Chennithala told the Governor that the families of the victims were distressed over the delay in the arrest of the assailants. The bereaved families were in a deep state of grief.

The Opposition leader informed Mr. Sathasivam that the North Zone police had been headless for the past eight months.

The government has not filled the post of Additional Director General of Police, North Zone.

Law and order in the sensitive jurisdiction has suffered due to the lack of a ranking officer to steer the police.

The Governor had triggered intense political speculation in November 2018 when he “invited” Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to “discuss the issues related to Sabarimala.”

Mr. Chennithala later said he had apprised the Governor of the CPI(M)’s culpability in the murders. Law and order in the State had deteriorated sharply.

People lived in a state of fear. The CPI(M) had targeted the young men wantonly and without any provocation.

Kerala had witnessed 29 political killings since the Left Democratic Front came to power in May 2016.

Mr. Chennithala said the government was protecting CPI(M) henchmen.

The martyred youth had hailed from impoverished backgrounds. Kripesh lived in a hutment with thatched palm fronds for walls. Sarath Lal’s case was no different.

He said the brutal murder had deeply pained him.

He has cancelled the receptions he had planned to hold in connection with his son’s marriage in Thiruvananthapuram and Haripad on February 21 and 23 respectively. He would use the money set aside for the function to conduct the marriage of Krishna Kripa, Kripesh’s sister.
