Govt to fill 19,600 vacancies in police dept by year end

Mysuru/Bengaluru, Aug 9: Home Minister G?Parameshwara on Monday said the state government will fill 19,600 vacancies in the Police department by the end of 2016.

He said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has agreed to fill 25,000 vacant posts in the department across the state. Around 6,000 personnel have already been appointed and are undergoing training. Process is on to recruit another 8,000. Besides, a notification will be issued within a week to appoint 8,000 constables and 650 sub-inspectors. The government aims to recruit larger number of women and 20% of the personnel will be women, Parameshwara said while addressing the probationary women police constables during their passing out parade at District Armed Reserve parade ground in Mysuru

The High Court on Monday asked the state government to start recruitments for at least 50% of the total vacancies in the Police department and come up with a structural formula for appointing police personnel.

Expressing displeasure over the state government not taking any significant steps to fill the vacancies, Justice A N Venugopala Gowda said the government must come up with an action plan to recruit personnel for the next three to four years and try to complete the entire recruitment procedure within a year. He said that every year the recruitment process should begin in February and end by December.

Advocate General Madhusudan R Naik said that a time frame cannot be fixed for the recruitment process as it requires co-operation from various departments. He said the government is filling the vacancies and increasing the personnel based on the future requirement.

Justice Gowda said that even though the government give its approval, it is normally the officers who delay the process. He directed the government to come up with a structural formula and submit it to the court in the next hearing on September 13, 2016.
