Tumakuru, Nov 12: Hardline Hindutva leaders and seers who took part in a saints' convention here have strongly opposed the conversion of Hindus into other religions and hinted at engaging in conversion of other community members into Hinduism.

The inaugural day of the saints' convention organised on the premises of Siddaganga Mutt here by Vishwa Hindu Parishat as part of its silver jubilee celebration saw hundreds of seers from Karnataka and beyond take part.

Delivering the keynote address the two-day conference on Tuesday, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat reiterated the sangh's stand of bringing back to Hinduism all those who had embraced other religions such as Christianity and Islam.

“There is a need to bring converts back to Hinduism. The saints and seers should take a lead in this regard. Thousands of VHP workers will support the seers in this endeavour,” he said.

He lauded the contribution made by mutt heads and saints in South India. “The saints in South India possess a strong sense of social responsibility and have a good connect with the society,” he said.

He alleged that foreign forces were attempting to break India's unity by resorting to conversion of religion and other activities.

Seers who took part in the conference felt that religious conversions are attributed to social evils like untouchability, casteism and inequality. The seers and saints should strive to end the conversions by alleviating social evils, they introspected.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar of Art of Living lamented that religious conversions were rampant in the prisons of Karnataka. Jail birds are being made Christian priests, he accused.

Inaugurating the event, Siddaganga Mutt seer Shivakumara Swami said India's biggest contribution to the world was spirituality. Everyone should develop a spiritual bent of mind.

Basavamurthy Madar Chennaiah Swami urged the VHP and other pro-Hindu organisations to allow Dalits to take part in shobha yatras and  treat them as native inhabitants of the country.

Over 500 seers, pontiffs and saints, including Nirmalanandanatha Swami of Adichunchanagiri Mutt, Shivaratri Deshikendra Swami of Sutturu Mutt, Vishweshateertha Swami of Pejawar Mutt, Dharmasthala Dharamadhikari Veerandra Heggade among others were present.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
