Hartals should not be called without issuing prior notice: Kerala HC

Kochi, Jan 7: The Kerala High Court ruled on Monday that Hartals should not be called without issuing a prior notice seven days ago.

The Court made the observation while considering the plea filed by Kerala chamber of commerce and Thrissur-based NGO Malayalavedi.

Pointing out that such strikes should not affect the fundamental rights of the people, the court, presided over by the Division Bench of Chief Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice A K Jayasankaran Nambiar observed that the notice should be issued seven days ago and added that any citizen can challenge the shutdown within the seven days of its call.

Criticising the government, the High Court asked what actions were taken by the government to tackle the attacks staged by hartal supporters of Sabarimala Karma Samithi, an umbrella organisation of right-wing outfits led by the RSS, recently.

Observing that Hartal was a serious issue, the court said the fact that 97 hartals called in the state in 2018 was 'unbelievable.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

• Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

• Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

• Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
