HDK withdraws conditions for tie-up with Cong in BBMP

September 8, 2015

Bengaluru, Sep 8: JD (S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Monday made a complete U-turn by withdrawing the conditions he had set for forging an alliance with the Congress in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike Council.

Addressing the media in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy said his party would not even try to bargain for power-sharing in the Council anymore.

“I had put certain conditions for the Congress, which was an independent decision.

I wanted the Congress to drop the Bengaluru restructuring bill. The party’s stand, however, was different. We have now taken an unanimous decision not to impose any conditions. The chief minister should take responsibility and set right the wrongs that have hampered the City’s development,” he said.

He said the party would accept the deputy mayor’s post if the Congress offered it. “The JD (S) City MLAs will take a call on the power-sharing module if the Congress feels benevolent enough to offer us the deputy mayor’s post,” he said. The party would not make demands with regard to the standing committee posts, too.

This is the first time the JD(S) has clarified its stand on the alliance with the Congress. For, ever since the election results were announced, the party had been assuming contradictory stances, giving room for many conspiracy theories.

No conditions: Deve Gowda

While the party national president H D Deve Gowda maintained that he had not laid down any conditions, Kumaraswamy had said that he would not meet the Congress leaders until they issued a public statement stating that they would drop the proposed BBMP restructuring bill.

Kumaraswamy said he had spoken to the State Congress president G Parameshwara and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over the phone on Sunday and conveyed the party’s stand. He might even meet Parameshwara in a day or two, he said.

Maintaining that the alliance with the Congress was restricted only to the BBMP, Kumaraswamy said the JD(S) would not mind ruling the Council along for the next five years, provided the Congress was willing to do the same.

He attacked both the Congress and the BJP for branding the JD(S) an opportunist. The national parties have “misused” his party to suit their convenience, he charged.

There are three frontrunners for the deputy mayor’s post in the JD (S) - MLA Gopalaiah’s wife S P Hemalatha who has been elected from Vrushabhavathinagar; MLA B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan’s candidates Umme Salma (Kushalnagar ward) and Nazima Khanam (KR Pet ward).

The corporators, presently in Kerala, will be brought back to Bengaluru just before the mayoral election on September 11.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
