Newsroom, May 31: The main accused in a recent (dis)honour killing case in Kerala’s Kottayam, which sent shockwaves across the country, had come from Dubai on emergency leave after telling his employer that his sister had gone missing.

Shanu Chacko aka Syanu Chacko (26), who worked as an electrician for a maintenance company in Dubai, was arrested by Kerala police in connection with the murder of his 20-year-old sister Neenu Chacko’s boyfriend-turned-husband Kevin P Joseph (23), who was a Dalit Christian. Neenu and Syanu’s father Chacko John was also arrested by the cops.

"Syanu was hysterically crying when he called me on Saturday (May 26), requesting for an emergency leave to go home. He said his sister is missing and his father is in hospital. I immediately let him go," the manager the company where the accused was working, was quoted as saying by a UAE newspaper.

"I am still in a state of shock after watching the news on television channels. I have known him for four years and still cannot fathom how he could do such a revengeful act," said the manager, requesting anonymity.

Kevin and Neenu were in a relationship for the last two years and her family was against it as he was a Dalit converted Christian. The so called upper caste Hindu convert Christians in India consider Dalit converts as lower castes. But Kevin and the Neenu went ahead and applied to get their marriage registered on May 24 in Kottayam.

On May 26, a gang of men stormed into the house where Kevin was hiding with his friend Aneesh, and abducted both of them. Kevin’s body was later found in a ditch in Chaliekkara, the place close to where the girls’ family live, according to media reports. Aneesh was later freed by the gang. According to the police investigation, Kevin was kidnapped and tortured to death the night Syanu landed in Kerala.

Kevin’s body bearing torture marks was found on May 28 at a dam site near Kollam and the preliminary autopsy report suggested he could have been forcibly drowned.

Police sources said that, Syanu came from UAE to orchestrate the chilling crime of murdering his sister’s husband. The Kottayam police who are investigating the case, have named Syanu as the main suspect and his father as the 14th suspect.
