Mangaluru, May 22: The Health Department in Karnataka is on high alert after two patients infected with suspected Nipah virus got admitted in two different hospitals in the coastal city of Mangaluru.
According to sources, the throat swab samples of the patients have been sent to Manipal Virus Research Center (MVRC) for testing and the report is expected to out within a day or two.
District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Ramakrishna said that once the MVRC report is out, it will be sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune for confirmation.
Meanwhile, the state health department has stepped up surveillance in Mangaluru and surrounding regions adjoining the state of Kerala, wherein the deadly disease has already claimed nearly a dozen lives.
Health Secretary Ajay Seth said that the department is also coming out with Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities to create awareness about the viral infection, among the people. The 104 Arogyavani (Health helpline) is also being sensitised to attend to calls from people, he said.
Calling upon people not to panic, the Health Secretary said people should not ignore fever, headache, drowsiness and related symptoms.
Health officials, especially in the border districts such as Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu, have been directed to intensify screening and create more awareness about the virus among their patients. A circular in this regard will be issued soon, he added.
