Udupi, Sept 30: The state government will take all necessary steps to upgrade the Udupi District Government Hospital and recruit additional staff gradually, promised Shivanand Patil, Minister for Health and Family Welfare.
Speaking to media persons after inspecting the hospital, the minister said that better facilities would be made available to the poor patients visiting the hospital.
The minister said currently the hospital has sufficient number of medical and para medical staffs. Once the hospital is upgraded, measures will be taken to ensure additional required staffs. New ambulances will be deployed into service shortly.
On the handing over of the Government Maternity and Children’s Hospital to a private entity in Udupi, Mr. Patil said that since the State government had already done it, he could not reverse the process.
But it was incumbent upon the Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Mother and Child Hospital, which had come up in the place of the Government Hospital, to listen to the local elected representatives.
It may be recalled that Udupi became a district headquarters in 1997 and the Taluk Government Hospital was renamed as District Government Hospital. The previous state government had had released Rs 1.38 crore for development of district hospital.
