Hyderabad, Sept 20: Within days after the coldblooded murder of a Dalit man by his casteist Hindu father-in-law at Telangana’s Miryalaguda town, a similar incident took place in Hyderabad, the capital of the same state yesterday. This time a casteist Hindu attempted to murder both his newly wedded daughter and Dalit son-in-law after inviting them under the pretext of presenting them a gift. While the condition of the girl is critical, the boy is recovering.

Madhavi (22), a girl from Backward Class Hindu community had recently got married to B Sandeep (24), youth from Scheduled Caste against the wishes of her parents and relatives.

On Wednesday girl’s father Manohara Chary, a resident of Borabanda, invited the couple saying that he has got new clothes for them.

Instead of taking clothes out of the bag, he took out a machete and attacked the unsuspecting couple, who were sitting on a scooter. He first attacked Sandeep, who ran away, leaving Madhavi to the mercy of her father.

Standing in the middle of the busy road, Chary attacked his daughter mercilessly. As she fell down he slit her throat, all the while threatening a security guard who was coming to help Madhavi.

As Chary was preparing to attack Madhavi again, a good Samaritan kicked him from behind indicating the sense of anger among the bystanders. He fled the scene but later surrendered before the police.

Madhavi’s condition is stated to be critical with grievous injuries in her neck, head and abdomen. She has been shifted to a corporate hospital where a team of doctors are trying to save her. Sandeep is recovering at a private hospital.

The SR Nagar police said the duo were in love since 2013 when Madhavi was in class X and Sandeep in intermediate. Threatened by her parents with dire consequences, Madhavi approached the SR police seeking protection.

The police counselled the parents and advised them against resorting to any kind of harassment. Madhavi’s father gave her a word and has been visiting her in-laws' place. “Madhavi believed that her father had accepted the marriage. She convinced my brother to meet her dad,” said Sandeep’s cousin brother Madhu.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
