Mysuru, Jun 12: Former chief minister Siddaramaiah said that it’s still a puzzle why the people of Chamundeshwari did not vote for him when he honestly worked for the development of the State and welfare of all the people, especially Dalits, OBCs and the poor.
He was speaking at a programme organised to thank the people of Varuna for electing his son Yathindra from the constituency, here on Tuesday. “But I will honour the people’s verdict since win and loss are part of the democracy,” he said.
Mr. Siddaramaiah, Badami MLA, said that he was satisfied because he worked sincerely and honestly for the welfare of the people. “I was never carried away either by victories and or defeats,” he said.
The former Chief Minister, however, said he will not contest elections any more. “But I will continue to be in politics to support the people who stood by me all these years.”
Arguing that politics was not “stagnant water”, he said two plus two is not four in politics but can be three, two or five.
“I think only good people face difficulties but people like you (pointing to the gathering) give me strength to overcome difficulties.”
Mr. Siddaramaiah said that he and his son were indebted to the people of Varuna for their support and they will repay them.
He said all welfare programmes of the previous Congress government will be continued by the coalition government.
“Being the chairman of the coordination committee, I’ll keep a track of them,” Mr. Siddaramaiah informed.
The former Chief Minister said there was no “Modi wave” in the country and this was evident in the recent by-elections to the Assembly and Lok Sabha seats which were mostly won by the non-BJP parties.
He also predicted that a Congress-led government at the Centre appears imminent in 2019.
On the occasion, Dr. Yathindra thanked the voters for electing him and gave full credit to his father and his five-year rule for his victory.
Mr. Siddaramaiah’s close aide and former Minister H.C. Mahadevappa was conspicuous by his absence at the thanksgiving function. However, his son Sunil Bose was present.
