Bengaluru, Aug 16: At least four men were injured, one among them critically, after swarms of honeybees attacked them in two separate incidents at Lalbagh Botanical Gardens during the Independence Day flower show.
Hanumanth Gowda Patela, 25, a technician at a private hospital near Jalahalli, and his friend Shivu M, 23, an electrician and a plumber, were attacked by bees the moment they stepped into the botanical gardens at 3pm. The two were rushed to South City Hospital near Wilson Garden.
Hanumanth Gowda's condition is said to be critical.
M Jagadeesh, joint director, horticulture, parks & gardens, Lalbagh, wasn't aware of the incident. He, instead, spoke of two other youngsters who were stung by bees on Monday afternoon.
"Suresh and his friend, both in their early twenties, were bitten by a few bees.
They received medical help within 15 minutes and were administered first aid at a medical facility at the venue itself," said Jagadeesh.
"Both were fine and continued their tour of the garden for another hour or so. This time, we have taken utmost care to avoid any untoward incident and had several meetings with BDA experts to ensure the venue is safe. We got rid of three bee hives from the main premises before commencing the show. Also, because this isn't their breeding season, there aren't too many honeybees around," he added.
Jagadeesh said extra care was taken this year after a seven-yearold girl died after she was attacked by bees in the I-Day flower show, 2015.
