Mangaluru, Nov 5: The authorities and doctors of the Unity Health Complex have brushed aside the allegations of the family members of an accident victim that they tried to “extort” money by "treating a dead body".

An accident involving a Tempo Traveller and a Maruti Omni had occurred at Padil on the outskirts of the city on Monday. Two youth -Ahmed Haaris and Latheef, from Kakkinje, who were travelling in the Maruti Omni-were injured in the accident. Ahmed (37) was gravely injured in the accident and was kept in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital.

According to family members, Ahmed had succumbed to his injuries Monday night, but the doctors continued to keep him in the ICU to increase the medical bills and extort money from the family.

Dozens of family members and relatives of the deceased gathered in front of the hospital on Tuesday and lambasted the doctors. “Even though the patient died soon after being admitted to the hospital, the doctors kept us in dark about his death just to increase the hospitals bills ,” the family members told reporters.

However, the hospital authorities clarified the patient breathed his last at around 4.p.m on Tuesday. “The accident victim was in a very critical condition. He was admitted to the ICU. He was alive till around 4:00p.m. The family members and relatives of the patient started fighting with doctors even before his death,” they said.

“Soon after the patient breathed his last, the family members were informed and body was handed over after completing formalities,” the hospital source said.

Meanwhile, sources from jurisdictional Kadri police station also said that when the police visited the hospital in the afternoon the accident victim was alive. They also said that the family members' claim was far from the truth.
