Lucknow, Mar 12: Asaduddin Owaisi led All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), not only drew a blank in the Uttar Pradesh elections, but also helped Bharatiya Janta Party win a few Muslim dominant constituencies this time.

AIMIM had fielded a around three dozen candidates in constituencies that hold substantial Muslim population. As expected, the AIMIM candidates managed to secure a few thousand Muslim votes in each constituency causing losses to Samajwadi Party, Congress, and Bahujan Samaj Party.
In some constituencies, the division of Muslim votes caused by the AIMIM has directly helped BJP. The following table drives you home how the Muslim dominant party helped the saffron party.

On the other hand, Owaisi has strongly justified his party’s decision to contest UP polls. "My purpose was to fight polls. We will keep up our efforts. We will work hard," he said, adding that he would focus on strengthening the party in UP.
The UP poll outcome dismissed the theory of a Muslim vote bank and also the allegation that MIM cut into the votes of "secular parties", Owaisi said.
Noting that his party fought in only 35 seats in the 403-member House in UP, he asked where did the votes of "secular parties go" in an election that saw BJP winning 312 seats.
