Bengaluru, Apr 7: A search by Income Tax Department officials of two bank lockers belonging to a person connected to former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda’s family has yielded over ₹6 crore, according to I-T sources.
D.T. Paramesh, a distant relative of Mr. Gowda, owns automobile showrooms in Shivamogga and is suspected to have hoarded the money meant to be used during election. He was among those whose properties were searched by I-T officials on March 28 and 29, which triggered a political controversy with coalition partners the Janata Dal (S) and the Congress accusing the Centre of making targeted attacks ahead of the Lok Sabha poll.
In all, the searches on various contractors, engineers, and intermediaries yielded close to ₹10 crore, including value of jewellery, said the I-T sources.
They said Mr. Paramesh told the Income Tax team, when the search was on, that the keys of two lockers in Canara Bank and Karnataka Bank had been misplaced.
But when the officials decided to break open the lockers, Mr. Paramesh claimed to have found the keys and produced them. These lockers were opened on Thursday.
