Mangaluru, Aug 2: Expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of around 10,000 jobless Indian expatriates stranded in Saudi Arabia, a senior leader of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has urged the union government to expedite their evacuation process and take necessary steps for their rehabilitation in India.
P K Kunhalikutty, the former Minister for Industries and Information Technology, Kerala and national treasurer IUML, who was in Mangaluru on Monday said that the employees of a construction company who were laid off following recession, are stranded without proper food in their camps in the Arab kingdom.
There were several Indians working in other construction firms that were set to close down, he claimed.
He also revealed that a large number of those who stranded are from Karnataka and north Indian states. The number of Keralites is below 1000, he added.
"Recession in the Saudi Arabia is due to the falling oil prices. The government should raise to the occasion and arrange tickets for the workers to come back. Arrangements also should be made for their rehabilitation by providing them jobs. In Kerala there is non-resident Keralites Welfare Board that looks into the issue. We will support the good work of the Union government," he said.
