Mangaluru, Apr 18: In a daring fraud, an imposter has managed to ‘sell’ a land worth crores of rupees to an influential entrepreneur and his son in the city using fake documents with the help of a few accomplices.
Acting on a complaint, the police managed to arrest eight persons including the alleged imposter on the charge of creating fake documents to effect a land sale to Dr Amarnath Sorake, president of the Karnataka Educational and Charitable Trust that runs SCS Hospital in Bendorewell, and his son Dr Abhinay Sorake. They are very close relative of Urban Development Minister Vinaykumar Sorake.
In his complaint, Abhinay Sorake has said that he and his father wanted to purchase land for commercial use. The father and son expressed their intention to Rabiyat, a resident of Todar Gundi.
Rabiyat took the two to a vacant 3.36 acre land in Pachchanady that was owned by Victor Olio Fernandes. When the duo expressed their keenness to purchase the property, they were shown documents and were also introduced to a person who claimed to be Mr. Fernandes.
As many as 12 persons, including an advocate, confirmed the identity of the person as the land owner. The two then purchased the land for Rs 2.51 crore.
On April 15, when the two went to see the land, they were confronted by the actual Victor Olio Fernandes. After the identity of Mr. Fernandes was confirmed, Dr. Abhinay Sorake filed a complaint with the Urwa police.
The police initially arrested Praveen from Kavoor, Alphonso M. D’Souza from Kulashekar, Jeevan Das Shetty from Vamanjoor, Paul Montero from Pajir and Vijesh Roshan from Naguri on the charge of creating fake identification documents such as voter ID card and PAN card and other documents. The police said Paul Montero impersonated Mr. Fernandes. Three more persons were arrested on Friday.
