Tension grips Kasargod as miscreants stab youth to death

Kasarogod, Jul 7: Violence broke out in the town after an 18-year-old boy was stabbed to death near Anangoor in Kasargod district around noon on Sunday.

T A Sabith (18), son of Badruddin from Surlu Meepuguri and an employee of Benzar clothe store is the deceased.

It is said that on Sunday, Sabith had been to Meepugiri maidan along with his friends when two miscreants on bike chased him and stabbed him. Sabith was riding a motorbike along with his friend, Abdul Raees.

Sabith who was seriously injured was rushed to a private hospital in the city where he succumbed to injuries.

News of Sabith's death fuelled tension in the region and within no time groups were seen pelting stones at buses and cars in and around Nullippadi.

Seven booked for murder

The police, who have registered murder cases against seven persons, said the situation was brought under control by late evening.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure have been imposed in areas in the Kasargod town and the Vidyanagar police station limits till July 13. Police reinforcements have been deployed.

Pillion rider Raees was questioned to identify the culprits, and seven persons were charged under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the police said.

Tense atmosphere

After the murder, shopkeepers downed the shutters apprehending trouble. Buses and other transport vehicles went off the road. Panic gripped people, especially women, stranded in the town without conveyance. The police have stepped up vigil in sensitive and vulnerable localities.

More police forces, including those from the KAP battalion from Kannur and personnel from other stations in the district, have been requisitioned.

Senior police officials, led by Superintendent of Police, Kannur, Rahul R. Nair, are camping in the town.

Earlier in the day, a group of people forced closure of shops on the old bus station premises.

A mob overturned a car near the taluk office. The mob threw stones at a few buses near the new bus station premises.

The glass panes of two Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses were smashed. The mob was dispersed by the police.

Condemns

P. Karunakaran, MP, on Sunday condemned the murder of 18-year old Sabith while he was moving in a motorbike with his friend at Anangaoor locality here. He urged the authorities to initiate stern action to book the culprits involved in the incident.

The murder of the innocent youth during broad daylight was quite unfortunate at a time when Kasargod was free from such incidents in recent months, he said.

Since several months Kasargod city had not witnessed any tension. Now, the city is experience obnoxious episode of unrest bringing Kasargod back to the days of fear, anxiety, uncertainty and suspicion.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: The Mangaluru City Police have issued a detailed traffic advisory ahead of the inaugural ceremony of Karavali Utsava, which will be held at the Karavali Utsava Ground on Saturday.

The festival will be inaugurated at 6:00 pm by Dakshina Kannada District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Cultural and public programmes will be held at the venue every evening and will continue until January 2.

According to City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, parking of vehicles is strictly prohibited on both sides of the road from Lalbagh to Karavali Utsava Ground. Visitors are requested to park their vehicles only at designated parking areas.

To help the public, traffic signboards and parking guidance flex boards have been installed along the routes leading to the venue. The police have urged commuters and visitors to follow these instructions to ensure smooth traffic movement.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.

Melkar (Bantwal): The 9th Annual Day celebration of SMR Public School, titled “EXCELLENTIA”, was held on December 15 with great enthusiasm and dignity, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey towards academic excellence and holistic development.
