Mangalore, Jun 13: Akhila Bharata Beary Parishad organised a felicitation programme for the elected representatives of Dakshina Kannada at the Town Hall in the city on Thursday.

Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo was felicitated on the occasion, with a citation, shawl and a fur hat. Speaking on the occasion, he said that felicitating someone was a way of showing their love and respect to them. “It is also a way of reminding you of the responsibilities you have towards people and the society. Our country, with its diverse culture, languages and religions, serves as an example to the entire world how we live together harmoniously. All languages, religions and customs need to be respected and allowed to grow. Along with developing the Beary language and its unique culture, one ought to respect and develop every language, religion and culture,” he told the community.

Although all the elected Cabinet ministers and MLAs of the district were to be felicitated on the occasion, only Mr Lobo attended the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, former Education Minister B A Mohideen said that we had to contemplate on using authority as a weapon to serve the society. “However, even public life has become a trade nowadays, and it is the time to reverse this. When Islam was founded centuries ago, it was founded on the principles of truth and justice, both social and financial. However, India being a multi-cultural one, we as Muslims should ponder over how to live according to the principles of Islam in a multi-cultural country, as mentioned in the Quran and other holy scriptures,” he said.

He said that unless there was sincere leadership by those in power, it was not possible to render social justice. “This is a testing time for elected representatives of the district, who must develop good leadership qualities. Following the example of Prophet Mohammed, one should function as a model corporator and work with transparency. Only when one works for the upliftment of the most downtrodden, can he be called a true Muslim,” he said.

Speaking after inaugurating the programme, chairman of Kanachur Academy Kanachur Monu shared his thoughts and views about the progress made by the Beary community.

Five corporators of Mangalore City Corporation belonging to the community were also felicitated on the occasion, along with corporators from Ullal Town Municipal Council and other town municipal councils in the district.

President of the Parishad Abdul Azeez Baikampady presided over the programme. Advisor Abdul Azeez Haq delivered the introductory address. General secretary Abdul Hameed Kinya welcomed the gathering while treasurer V Mohammed Bajpe delivered a vote of thanks.

Vice-president of DK Muslim Central Committee Ibrahim Kodijal, President of Beary Welfare Association B M Farooq and treasurer of Central Jumma Masjid S M Rasheed were present.

The programme was inaugurated in a unique way by slicing a slab of traditional wheat halwa.

The felicitation ceremony was followed by a cultural programme with folk songs and entertainment for the audience in Beary language.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
