Bengaluru, Nov 25: Veteran Congress leader Jaffer Sharief, who died here today, was known for his loyalty to Congress party and the Gandhi family.

But he was never short of making remarks that came to his mind and had said RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat was a fit case to be the next President of India, before Mr Ram Nath Kovind was elected to the post in 2017.

Mr Sharief, known as a good administrator during his long stint as Minister of Railways had, however, been sidelined by the party for the past several years in Karnataka and elsewhere, the decision by the high command mainly attributed to his age.

The minority leader from the city, a multiple time winner of Lok Sabha seat from Bengaluru North before Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda defeated him, was however steadfast in demanding a share in Assembly and Lok Sabha seats from the State to his sons and supporters but with little success.

Irked for being sidelined by the party, the veteran minority leader had been making some cryptic remarks and statements in the last few years that had put the Congress high command in a fix.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
