Newsroom, Sept 2: Amidst the communal tensions luring over the country, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JUH) chief Maulana Syed Arshad Madani yesterday visited Keshav Kunj, the Rashtriya Swamsevak Sangh’s headquarters in Delhi and held a peace talk with RSS supremo Mohan Bhagwat and other leaders.
JUH is one of the leading organizations of Islamic scholars belonging to the Deobandi school of thought in India. Founded in 1919, JUH was an active participant in the Khilafat Movement in collaboration with the Indian National Congress prior to independence. It also opposed the Partition of India, taking the position that Muslims and non-Muslims form one nation.
The meeting which reportedly lasted for one and a half hour was portrayed by media as an attempt towards Hindu Muslim unity. "Both the sides were satisfied with the deliberations and agreed on similar interactions in future too," a media reports said.
According to reports, topics like mob lynching, atmosphere of anarchy, hatred, issue of NRC along with the need to ensure unity and diversity were discussed.
"We two (RSS and Jamiat) could even come on the same stage, a platform in the public, to spread this message of brotherhood but since I don't have a definite plan for it yet, I cannot say more. We will see how things pan out," said Madani.
Madani said he flagged Jamiat's opposition to RSS's ideas on certain issues citing the views of V D Savarkar and M S Golwalkar. Sources said Bhagwat spoke of how Hindutva was about brotherhood and about Hindus and Muslims co-existing in harmony.
According to RSS sources, the invitation to Madani for talks was not new as it was extended to him months ago when he, as part of Bhagwat's three-day discourse at Vigyan Bhavan, was invited for public interaction. However, Madani decided to stay away over instances of cow vigilantism.
