Karwar, Mar 30: The Janata Dal (Secular) received another jolt on Saturday when its Uttara Kannada candidate Shivananda Naik withdrew his nomination, facilitating a straight fight between sitting Lok Sabha member Ananth Kumar Hegde of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prashant Deshpande of the Congress.

The first jolt came when its Gangavathi MLA Iqbal Ansari did not file the nominations for Koppal LS constituency on the last day and announced the party 's support to secular forces.

A triangular contest was expected in Uttara Kannada as Mr. Naik too was considered a force to reckon with.

Mr. Naik said that the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Sorab MLA Madhu Bangarappa, who brought him to the party offering ticket, did not fulfil the promise of bearing the election expenditure. “I cannot spend from my pocket, putting my family in peril,” he said.

Reacting to the withdrawal, Mr. Kumaraswamy said, “Fifty per cent of the promise had been fulfilled and he was committed to keep up his promise. Mr. Naik should reveal the real reason behind the withdrawal. If he was unable to contest the polls, he should have told the party before filing the papers.”

However, Mr. Naik said, “From the beginning, I was reluctant to contest as I did not have my own resources. Still, I got pamphlets and other poll material ready on my own. I was in Bangalore before filing the papers, and I told the party leaders to look for another candidate if they are unable to bear the election expenditure. After filing the papers, neither Mr. Kumaraswamy nor Mr. Madhu accepted my telephone calls. I had also told the leaders that I would be forced to withdraw the nomination if they do not keep up their promise.”

Asked whether this would create a void in the constituency, Mr. Naik said it was solely due to the party leadership. “Ten minutes before the withdrawal deadline, party national president H.D. Deve Gowda called me, urging me not to withdraw. But I had already made up my mind.” Mr. Naik withdrew the papers at 2.50 p.m. on Saturday.

On the allegations that the withdrawal was influenced ' by one of the candidates in the fray, Mr. Naik said people in the constituency know his ethical standards. “I 'll not stoop to such a low level,” he said.

It was said that Naik would give a tough fight to the two national parties. He reportedly has a good following among Muslim voters.

Naik had lost the last Assembly elections from the Bhatkal seat, contesting on a KJP ticket. He had later quit the party to join the JD(S). It is said that a huge amount of money has changed hands, with the involvement of a senior politician from the district, in getting Naik to exit from the fray.

There is also talk that the JD(S) candidate 's withdrawal from the fray is a quid pro quo action for the Congress ' tacit support to JD(S) candidate Geetha Shivrajkumar in the Shimoga constituency.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
