JD(S) fields 2nd nominee for MLC polls, seeks BJP support

May 31, 2016

Bengaluru: May 31: The JD(S)?on Monday sprung a surprise by fielding two candidates for the polls to the Legislative Council. It is banking on the support of the BJP?to win the second seat.

The party last week had announced former MLC?K?V?Narayanaswamy as the candidate. On Monday, it introduced a new face to the party - S?M Venkatapathi, who is runs a chain of hospitals and educational institutions in Bengaluru. He hails from Hoskote. Both the candidates filed their papers on Monday.

The elections (if required) are scheduled to be held for seven seats of the Council on June 10, with MLAs as the electoral college.

A candidate needs a minimum of 29 votes to get elected. The ruling Congress, with 123 MLAs, can win four seats, while the BJP and the JD(S) with 44 and 40 MLAs respectively, can win one each. The BJP and the JD(S) will be left with excess votes.

It is these excess votes that the JD(S) is banking on to get its second candidate elected. The BJP has 15 and the JD(S) 11 excess votes, after allotting votes to their first candidate.

The JD(S) legislature party, held on Monday, formally endorsed the name of Venkatapathi as the candidate. He is the chairman of the East-Point group of educational institutions and hospitals. A native of Hoskote, he is a Vokkaliga and a one-time close associate of the late Jeevaraj Alva in the erstwhile Janata party.

“We are in talks with the BJP, seeking their support for our second candidate. They should remember that we suported their candidate, Mallikarjun, in the 2014 Council elections and reciprocate,” Kumaraswamy told a press conference.

On Monday, two of the four candidates fielded by the Congress - Veena Achaiah and Youth Congress president Rizwan Arshad - filed their papers. Former KPCC?president Allum Veerabhadrappa and former minister B B?Thimmapur will file their papers on Tuesday.
It may be a quid pro quo

If the BJP and the JD(S) come to an understanding, then all seven candidates in fray will get elected unopposed to the Council.

If the BJP wants to hold the reins of administration in the BBMP?council, it will have to heed the request by the JD(S) and not field a second candidate for the Council elections.

The Congress may lose the support of the JD(S) in the BBMP. Talks are on between JD(S) leader Kumaraswamy and BJP?leaders R?Ashoka and D?V?Sadananda Gowda, sources said. The BJP nominee is V?Somanna. It has not totally given up the idea of a second candidate. The names of Lehar Singh and Katta Subramanya Naidu have cropped up.

Kumaraswamy said, “We may have to take some hard decisions when it comes to the BBMP.” His efforts to get the support of the Congress to win a Rajya Sabha seat have failed. Hence, he is in talks with the BJP.

In a fresh claim, arrested BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda has alleged that Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and four other ministers were behind exposing Prajwal Revanna’s sex scam that has brought disgrace to Janata Dal (Secular) H D Deve Gowda family.

Devaraje Gowda has been arrested in a sexual abuse case.

Speaking to reporters while being taken to the district prisons, in Hassan on Friday, Gowda alleged that he was offered Rs 100 crore to drag the name of H D Kumaraswamy in the Prajwal’s case.

“D K Shivakumar had offered me Rs 100 crore to project that H D Kumaraswamy was behind the case. The offer was made through ministers N Chaluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge and another minister. They had even sent Rs 5 crore as advance to Bowring Club. But I did not agree. Hence, they hatched a plot to trap me,” Gowda alleged.

“It is D K Shivakumar, who collected all information from Prajwal Revanna’s former car driver Karthik and readied the pen drive. A team of four ministers were formed to handle the issue. As I did not agree to the plan. They planned to bring disrepute to the BJP, Narendra Modi and H D Kumaraswamy,” he said.

Gowda further alleged that former MLC M A Gopalaswamy of Channarayapatna was sent to him for negotiation.

“The main intention of D K Shivakumar is to bring disrepute to Modi and BJP in the case. Besides, he wanted to defame H D Kumaraswamy’s leadership in the state” he claimed. “They filed a sexual harassment and rape case against me, but found no evidence. Now, they are trying to fix me in the pen drive case” he alleged.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Sunday said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing into sexual abuse charges against Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, will not be going abroad to bring him back, and the Interpol will share information about him.

He also cautioned political leaders about making public statements or sharing information in connection with the case, which is sensitive.

The 33-year-old Prajwal Revanna, who is grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, is facing charges of sexually abusing several women.

The scandal has raised a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD(S) engaged in a slugfest.

Prajwal Revanna is said to have flown abroad on April 27, a day after the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka was held.

He was BJP-JD(S) alliance's joint candidate from Hassan Lok Sabha segment, which went to polls in the first phase.

"No, there is no such option. Blue Corner Notice has been issued and the Interpol will share the information. The respective country in which he is found or identified - they will inform them (Interpol) and then our agencies, the CBI will get to know, and through them we will get to know."

"So far there is no information," Parameshwara said.

He was responding to a question on reports about the SIT team travelling abroad in connection with the case.

Speaking to reporters, he said, "Investigation is going on, not to affect the investigation we don't want to share any information."

Responding to a question on Union Minister Pralhad Joshi's statement alleging conspiracy behind the arrest of BJP leader Devaraje Gowda, for making allegations against Congress leaders in connection with the case, Parameshwara said, "If anyone says anything I cannot react to it. We cannot respond to every public statement. As this is a serious case, we cannot share information until the investigation is completed."

"My request to the public and to our leaders is to be cautious while making statements. If not, based on the statements given by them, we may have to call them for investigation and record their statement under 41 A of CrPC," he added.

Asked whether JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy will also be served notice, the Minister said he is a former CM and that he believes that the former has taken this case seriously.

"Before giving any statements on this case or before sharing any information in the public domain, one has to be cautious, and this applies to all," he added.

Udupi: Udupi became the second city on the Karnataka coast after Mangaluru to launch water rationing, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Commissioner of the Udupi City Municipal Corporation Rayappa said that the rationing system will come into force from Wednesday and will continue till the water in the reservoir reaches comfortable levels.

The dam built across the Swarna river at a place called Baje, which is the only source of water for Udupi city, recorded 3.25 meters of water as against the top level of 6.30 meters.

The decision of water rationing will be reviewed periodically until the reservoir regains its fullest levels, the official said.

The Mangaluru City Corporation resorted to water rationing on Saturday following declining water levels in the reservoir built across the Nethravati river at Thumbe.
