Mangalore, Jul 19: Over 50 persons protested against the brutal and disproportionate use of force and violence on the civilians of Gaza by Israel, in a demonstration held under the aegis of the district youth wing of Jamaath-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Dakshina Kannada in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Saturday.
The demonstrators demanded that the United Nations should convene a special session at General Assembly to condemn the Israeli offensive and instigate action against Israel for attacking the defenseless population of Gaza. They also demanded to lift the siege and blockade of Gaza continuing for years and to make Israel accountable for the civilian losses over the years.
Addressing the demonstrators, professor at Mangalore University Dr Udaya Barkur said that the Israeli regime was waging war to grab control over on Palestine since 1967. So far, the number of casualties in the latest Israeli attacks has crossed 300 and Israel continued its relentless tirade of missiles killing hundreds of people.
Holding the United States partly responsible for the ongoing conflict in Gaza, he said that the US branded the rulers of Arab countries such as Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi and others as terrorists between a period from 1950 to 2010 and waged wars on Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya under false pretexts. Why is the US silent on the Israel-Gaza conflict? What is stopping the US from declaring the Israeli rulers as terrorists and stopping the violence on innocent civilians in Gaza? The US is plundering the oil in Arab countries and wants to control the oil fields in the Middle East, he said.
Manager of Shanthi Prakashana publication house Mohammed Kunhi said that Israel was one of the biggest terrorist countries in the world, which had dropped over 2,000 bombs over Gaza Strip in the past week and the most of them who were killed were women and children.
Editor of Anupama monthly magazine Shahanaz M also addressed the demonstrators.
A memorandum was submitted to the deputy commissioner to be forwarded to Secretary General of United Nations.
