Udupi, May 8: A head on collision between two motorbikes claimed the lives of four youths, while a boy sustained critical injuries near Ajekar in Karkala taluk of Udupi district.
The deceased have been identified as Santhosh (23), Dinesh (18) from Naravi and Praveen (32) from Andaru and Sundara (50) from Kervashe. Vignesh, an 11-year-old boy is hospitalised with multiple injuries.
Santhosh, a pre-university student from Kasaragod and Dinesh, a B.Com student from Mangaluru, were proceeding towards Kuthloor from Hebri on a bike after attending a wedding function.
The other three were going on another motorbike in the opposite direction after purchasing some food items for a house warming ceremony.
Both motorbikes were collided while negotiating curve from opposite directions at Shirlalu Paduvettu near Ajekar. While Santosh, Dinesh and Praveen lost their lives on the spot, Sundara breathed his last on the way to a hospital in Manipal.
Over speed and carelessness is said to be the reason for the tragedy. Moreover, none of the pillion rider was wearing helmet, sources said.
A case has been registered at Ajekar police station and investigations are on.
