Kodagu, Nov 30: Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy will lay the foundation stone for the construction of houses for Kodagu flood-affected families and hand over site allotment letters to the affected persons on December 8, said Minister for Housing and Urban Development U T Khader.

A 2BHK house would be built at a cost of Rs. 9.85 lakh and the State government was spending over Rs. 105 crore on the project. A sum of Rs. 32 crore would be spent on providing drinking water, electricity and other facilities in the colonies where the houses would be built.

“The project is entirely state-funded and no Central grant had been received,” said Mr Khader.

Minister for Tourism and Sericulture S.R. Mahesh, who is the in-charge Minister for Kodagu district, said the land for building the houses had been handed over to the district administration.

Each affected family had received a one-time grant of Rs. 50,000. They would be getting Rs. 10,000 as rent each month until they occupy the houses, the Minister said, adding that each house would be built in less than five months with eco-friendly materials.

Mr. Khader said 845 houses would be built for the affected persons.

The earlier plan was to build a single-bedroom house but the plan was later modified adding one more room.
