Bengaluru, Sept 15: The recent political developments including simmering discontent within Congress amidst BJP’s attempt to buy MLAs and looming bypolls to fill three Legislative Council seats are likely to force chief minister H D Kumaraswamy to postpone the long-awaited expansion of the Karnataka Cabinet.
The last meeting of the coordination committee of the JD(S)–Congress government had decided to expand the State Cabinet in the third week of September. The MLAs of the coalition partners – Congress and JD(S) – were lobbying hard for the cabinet berths.
At present, seven Cabinet berths are vacant. Of this, the share of the Congress is six and that of the JD(S) is one. However, highly placed sources said the expansion exercise to fill seven berths is likely to be held only after the council bypolls (October 3).
The Congress fears that Cabinet expansion before the byelections would fuel dissidence among party legislators and could spoil the party’s chances in ensuring victory of its candidates. Already, Jarkiholi brothers of Belagavi have been at loggerheads with top leaders of the party after elections to a cooperative bank in Belagavi earlier this month.
The brothers, Municipal Administration Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi and Satish Jarkiholi, have put forward several demands ahead of the Cabinet expansion. To iron out differences in the coalition, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswmay is expected to meet Mr. Ramesh Jarkiholi on Saturday.
The byelections to the Council would be the first test of “sharing” between the coalition partners. The coordination committee had decided to face the elections as an alliance to challenge the BJP.
